چکیده

The lack of image brightness is a common problem in optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMD) where a beamsplitter is required to combine views from HMD image source and the direct-view of a real world scene. This problem is further aggregated in a headmounted projective display (HMPD) due to the fact that light passes through the beamsplitter multiple times. In this paper, we present a novel design of an ultra-bright polarized head-mounted projective display (p-HMPD). The image brightness observed by a viewer theoretically is four-times brighter than existing designs. We further demonstrate a design with currently available technology that leads to a display in which the observed image is significantly brighter than existing designs. Finally, experimental results from a bench setup are presented.

Engineering of head-mounted projective displays.

Head-mounted projective displays (HMPD's) are a novel type of head-mounted display. A HMPD consists of a miniature projection lens mounted upon the user's head and retroreflective sheeting material placed strategically in the environment. First, the imaging concept of a HMPD is reviewed and its potential advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The design and a bench prototype implementation...

Subjective Image Quality Assessment of a Wide-view Head Mounted Projective Display with a Semi-transparent Retro-reflective Screen

This paper reports on a wearable Hyperboloidal Head Mounted Projective Display (HHMPD) and two user studies on the evaluation of visual quality of a wearable HHMPD. Using a hyperboloidal mirror, an HHMPD can provide a wide field-ofview (FOV), a large observational pupil, and optical see-through capability. We propose a simple head attached screen that is both retro-reflective and semi transpare...

A Testbed for Precise Registration, Natural Occlusion and Interaction in an Augmented Environment Using a Head-Mounted Projective Display (HMPD)

A head-mounted projective display (HMPD) consists of a pair of miniature projection lenses, beam splitters, and displays mounted on the helmet and retro-reflective sheeting materials placed strategically in the environment. It has been recently proposed as an alternative to existing 3D visualization devices. In this paper, we first briefly review the HMPD technology, including its featured capa...

Laser-pointer Based Interaction with Projective 3D Environments

3D immersive environments are one of the strongest ways to get people involved in computer simulated worlds. Traditional techniques for creating these environments involve bulky, expensive, specialized equipment such as head mounted displays. Projector based environments sidestep many of these issues. This paper looks into using red-cyan stereo glasses to add depth to projective environments, a...

Design of Head mounted displays

This tutorial summarizes the design of head mounted displays. The HMD design is inherently an interdisciplinary subject fusing optical engineering, optical materials, manufacturing techniques, user interface design, computer science, human perception, and physiology for assessing the displays. The report focuses on the optical designs, human factors of HMD. Currently there are two types of micr...
